₹ver used a bullet-shaped ┥ poppers inhaler? Worn a leather motorcycle cap? Played with a shower shot?

If you have, then you owe a debt of gratitude to Alan Selby, founder of Mr. S Leathers in San Francisco and one of the most active members of the leather community. It was Selby, a bearded English topman and the person this magazine once called the original leather daddy, who created all the above products (and many more) in the form we use or wear today.

Selby introduced American gay leathermen to the value of superior workmanship in leather gear. Disappointed in the slapdash caliber of most leather merchandise he found during a trip to San Francisco in 1969, the British Navy veteran returned to London and started a mail-order business, selling merchandise from London Leatherman. Shortly afterward, an American company, Stagecoach Leathers, contacted him to represent the line in the U.S.

Soon Selby set up a small factory to manufacture his own products, eventually opening the first Mr. S shop in London's Wandsworth district. In 1979, he relocated himself and the business to San Francisco's hot and kinky Folsom Street corridor .

Ten years later Selby sold Mr. S, and in 1990, he retired completely . Even though he no longer owns it, he still takes pride in the business.

Pretty Boy, a film by Carsten Sonder, follows thirteen-year-old Nick (Christian Tafdrup) as he goes from run away to kept boy to member of a gang of street hustlers and thieves. Set Copenhagen, Pretty Boy in proves that dysfunctional families and urban blight are not uniquely American problems. These are the forces that drive this Danish film to it tragic conclusion.

The story is a modern love triangle. Nick is torn between Ralph (Stig Hoffmeyer), the man who gave him shelter and love when he firsts arrives in the city, and Renée (Benedicte W. Madsen), a young woman who passes as a boy and leads a band of teenage ne'er-do -wells. The story is full of promise. Oliver Twist falls in love with a transgendered Artful Dodger while he in turn is pursued by a married man. Unfortunately, Pretty Boy uses this great premise for shock value and fails to truly examine the deeper questions of love and sexuality that lurk beneath the surface.

Certainly the sexuality of the characters is central to our understanding of the story, yet writer / director Sonder only truly explores the most traditional of the various relationships, that of the young boy and girl discovering heterosexual sex together. Nick seems to be drawn to hustling, but we never see him express sexual interest in men, yet alone older men. In fact, we never see any of the hustlers engaging in a sexual act for money. We are given clues that some are straight and others are gay, but their sexuality is kept at a distance.

Nick is attracted to Renée when he believes that she is a boy. The actress, however, is not actually androgynous enough to pass, and we never believe that she is a boy; therefore the homoeroticism of this relationship is destroyed. The movie also plays it safe with Ralph. He is, of course, a pedophile, yet he is the eunuch of pedophiles. The closest he gets to sex with Nick is watching the boy shower. All the relationships are driven by affection until Renée's gender is revealed and we see the only sex in Pretty Boy.

A coalition of 20 groups and individuals filed suit in federal court to block legislation enacted by Congress and signed by President Clinton in February banning transmission of "indecent" and "patently offensive" material over computer networks . The coalition filed suit simultaneously here in the city known as the cra- dle of American democracy and in Los Angeles, charging the law amounts to censorship that will affect even the availability of abortion information. Organizations and compa-nies involved in the suit include the American Civil Liberties Union, American Online and Microsoft Corp.

The judge in Philadelphia issued an injunction blocking enforcement of the indecency clause, but left intact the clause allowing the government to prosecute anyone who, knowingly or not, transmits "patently offensive" material to minors.

Known as the Communications Decency Act, the law is part of a broader bill generally aimed at revising telecommunications business regulations . It makes it a punishable crime to transmit indecent or patently offensive material online. The problem, critics argue, is the loose definition of the terms. Unlike obscenity , which has a specific legal definition, "indecent" and "patently offensive" remain vague terms with widely different meanings to different people at different times. Traditional "polite society," for example , regards any reference to sex, nudity or bodily functions as indecent, yet such references can be classified as obscene only when designed primarily to appeal to so-called prurient interests.

In any case, critics con-tend , online speech should be considered akin to print media and private communication , which have few restrictions, rather than television and radio, which have many. Observers say the issue is likely to be decided by the Supreme Court.

Labeling the gay publication B. B. Ads obscene, local police raided the home and office of publisher J. Allen and seized all office equipment, account books, files and more than $600 in postage stamps and cash, along with many personal items and photographs. Fritscher's examination of "homomasculinity" through these portraits, both posed and candid, illustrate Fritscher's vision of male archetypes in American culture, enticing us to ask questions about manhood in America and the nature of male eroticism. Fritscher rejects the Playgirl school of male photography (which is nothing more than a re-working of Playboy's portrayal of women) for an aesthetic that explodes with male vitality. Occasionally the images evoke classical sculpture (as in his portraits of Don Russo.) More often they remind us of our own, often unrealized, sexual fantasies.

My personal favorites were the bondage photographs, such as David Sparrow Honeymoon Photo Album and Larry Hunt Bound and Hooded, that both aroused and disturbed . Also of special erotic (and aesthetic) appeal were the deceptively straight forward, Cowboy Underwear, John Muir American Bear and Jack Eye #2 portraits.

Queer fans have known for years that a disproportionate number of queer comic book fans are into leather, so it was only natural that the genre expanded to include kink from the beginning of queer strips. Bill Ward was among the first to depict the leather world through graphic fiction, his superior artistic and story telling abilities exciting fans since his early Drum strips for Drummer in the late 1970s.

This new collection of his work includes three different strips. Starting with an adaptation of Robert Payne's The Exchange, Ward brings his extraordinary talents to task, creating an exciting world of men, sex, leather, and kink. As enjoyable as this adaptation is, however, it is in illustrating his own stories that Ward best shines, bringing his erotic vision to life with a flourish few comic strip artists have achieved.

Included in this collection is one of the best Drum story lines ever, Drum and the Bear. Drawing on the universally subconscious world of the totem, Ward strikes primal chords in a seemingly facile way, exciting that most precious of all sex organs, the brain, as few can. Sadly, the story is unfinished. One longs for the complete tale, however , perhaps as a full length graphic novel. Also included is Ward's strip, Zeke, a sort of horse hung Forest Gump. As amusing as these strips are - which is all they are intended to be, after all - they lack the erotic intensity of Ward's other work.

Some of us are guttersnipes, who wander the back alleys of the mind-and the streets-in search of chain smoking sexual outlaws.

I recently had sex with three different people within four hours. I did not know any of these people well. One individual was a total stranger. Another had a lover who had many friends lurking nearby. The third person, someone I knew vaguely, happen to be sitting next to me at a party at a Thai restaurant.

I had all this sex during a posh weekend conference held at a prestigious hotel. I performed my sexual acts in extremely public bathrooms, one being in a very conservative part of the city. At any moment my partners and I risked discovery-and arrest.

This evening of illicit sex actually began long before I ever met my bathroom sex partners. My mind had been spinning fantasies for months, perhaps years. It wanted out-of responsibility, civility and any form of acceptability. So it created egresses out of the work-a-day world and into the seamier side of life. It's a world my mind-and my body-knows intimately. I sit at my desk or stand in line at the bank my mind roves through back alleys, trawls public bathrooms, seeks frequenters of life's seedier environs. Once a willing partner is found, the acts we perform are always dark, dirty and brutal. The locations-back alleys, public spaces or abandoned buildings-are equally depraved. The sex I find in these places is always satiating and the people dangerous.

I am someone who chooses to act on these fantasies. Fortunately for me, so do many others. They, like me, get off by finding and walking on the wild side. Like me, if the sex is going to be hot, it requires an edge. We fuck illicitly. Illegally. And always with some kind of risk. Normalcy, legality, something has to be subverted . Subversion by definition requires that something, such as the government or perhaps a moral code of behavior must be overturned.

This mandatory subversive edge is why some of us get off finding then watching people smoke. Others get off just by smoking. Stogies. Cigarettes. Pipes. Choose your poison. The act or the observation of the act gets some people off. Because smoking is dangerous , disgusting. And totally raunchy. Only degenerates-like James Dean or Marlon Brando-smoke. Law breakers smoke. Criminals suck on cigars. Bastards that would as soon kill you as suck you off usually have a pack of camels rolled up in their tee shirts. People who smoke-and do other subversive things-might destroy our safe jobs, pillage our nice neighborhoods and fuck us up the ass. These same people hang around doorways and suck on things that will kill them. And they most likely do other sexually disgusting things. We hate them. We must be wary of them. We are, quite honestly, totally fascinated with these beings. They hang around in the same back alleys-and public bathrooms-that we do. We can only hope that, if we get up the nerve and enter those alleys they will light up a cigarette, grab us around the throat and fuck the shit out of us. Then when they are through with us, use us as their ashtrays. Yeah, that's what we want. To be ashtrays.

Unless we want to be the smokers. The fuckers, looking for some smarmy ashtray to fuck.
