Sunlove pointed out that the very prospect of arrest would be sufficient chill expression. to "Maybe we would win in court if we were arrested, but how often could we afford to defend ourselves ? If we were brought to court in 12 different municipalities, there's no way we could pay for our defense," she said, adding that she had already begun to tone down the content of Spectator in anticipation of the law's enforcement.

The outcome will not be decided until May at the earliest and possibly not until 1997. Even then, either Sunlove and her colleagues or state Attorney General Dan Lungren, a pronounced conservative, could appeal the decision to the Supreme Court.

Bolton-Jones Sever Business Ties

Bolton-Jones Productions is no more. The SM / fetish film-making company has reverted to Bob Jones Productions with the breakup of the business relationship between producer Bob Jones and director / performer Rick Bolton. Bob Jones Productions became Bolton-Jones Productions when Jones moved his business to San Francisco from the East Coast early in 1994. Bolton, who had performed in numerous Bob Jones films, moved to California with his wife to help get the business established in its new location. With Bolton's help, Jones also opened a retail store and video gallery in front of the Folsom Street studio. A jury's damage award of only $1 has angered a producer of gay videos whose work was illegally censored by a local cable operator. Police in the West Midlands learned of region American citizen Kevin William Curry's alleged activities while monitoring two Internet user groups with the word "pedophile" in their titles.

Subsequently, they passed the information to U.S. authorities, who continued the investigation. U.S. Customs agents raided Curry's home and seized, in the words of U.S. Attorney Tony West, "thousands of computer images depicting children engaged in sex acts." They also seized 14 sexually explicit videos and "hundreds " of photographs.

Curry reportedly admitted he traded images using an encryption program Good Pretty called Privacy, or PGP. We must be vigilant about all forms of censorship.

It isn't fashionable to talk about censorship . People don't like it. It makes them uncomfortable to be reminded that governments have this power and frequently exercise it. It's frightening to think about books being burned, presses and bookstores being trashed or put out of business, and editors, publishers and authors being sent to jail or fined. What the state can do to a piece of paper, it can do to the human body. By limiting what we can read about, the state limits our agenda for social change. When any medium of expression is hampered by police powers , we lose some of our latitude to criticize the institutions that govern our lives. We lose some of our already-puny ability to make these institutions accountable. So we have to be vigilant about censorship, find out when it's happening (no easy task), and oppose it with every ounce of our strength.

That includes the kind of censorship that is practiced by institutions less powerful than the federal government or even a local police chief. I am talking about a bookstore that refuses to carry On Our Backs, Hothead Paisan, Macho Sluts, or the NAMBLA Journal; a magazine that refuses to print certain articles, images, or advertising; a gallery that removes troublesome pictures of sex, nudity or violence; a performance space that will not host Holly Hughes, Karen Finley, Keith Hennessey, or Ron Athey; even down to the most petty level of the personal disclosures you will not allow your friends to make or the confession that would make you leave your lover if she ever dared to whisper them in your ear. The intolerance of vice squads, customs agents, and judges has to come from somewhere. It comes from within us, from our intolerant and timid hearts. The source of censorship is our lack of compassion, our fear of difference, our reluctance to see the cracks in our image of The Truth.

We must address our complicity with the censors because they select their targets with an acute sense of our shame, cowardice, ignorance, and discomfort . When the state tries to control what we can read, hear, or see, it does not (at least in the beginning) attack Broadway plays, the daily newspaper that people read on their way to work, best-selling novels, or prime-time television . To be at-risk for censorship, a work must meet two criteria: it must say unpalatable things; and it must seem indefensible (either because of the extreme content, or because its maker or distributor lacks the material resources to protest state infringement). Like all bullies, censors are rather cowardly themselves. So they go after things that can't be described on the evening news or reproduced in a newsstand magazine; things that might amuse, shock, or arouse us, but are for that very reason difficult to justify; things that seem expendable and trivial .

People with transgressive sexualities are always hiding, always on the run, even if only in a psychological or emotional sense, because pleasurable sex has always been a reliable target for moral reformers and politicians seeking re-election. I'm not talking about the sublimated kind of sex that is used to sell cars and bottled cappuccino, faux-sex that tries to get you to substitute maxing out your credit card for screwing somebody through the mattress. I'm talking about the kind of material that provokes hard-ons, wet-ons, and ejaculations of both genders: gray market and black market media that say things about the body that a lot of people don't want to hear (even if they secretly agree with it). Pornography is as unpopular with most governments as seditious rhetoric because it has a similar function. Pornography is the grand brawling voice of sexual frustration and panic. It is the only media we have that reliably attacks sex and gender and says, what I have isn't good enough, I don't believe I am the person they say I am, this isn't working, I need something different, I need somebody different, I need more! Pornography is to our injured twentieth-century libidos what medieval churches were to thieves on the run: sanctuary, an unconditional refuge from normalcy and inadequacy, a respite from responsibility, failed relationships , imperfect physiques, and baffled genitalia. Despite its tendency to become commercialized, like everything from food to medicine to air in capitalistic society, visiting the realm of pornography is a good deal more healthy and a damn sight cheaper that the compulsory annual pilgrimages some people make to Disney World.
