Raw Deal for US Writers

Early in Drummer's history I had submitted a couple of pieces of fiction for consideration along with a cover letter saying how much I admired the publication and how much I would like to have my work included in it.

Many years later, after several publications elsewhere, I again submitted stories to Drummer. John Rowberry published my "City Boy-Country Boy" in Drummer #50 in 1981. But when I complained about the delay in payment he sent back the two other stories he had also accepted. These were published in Honcho in 1982. For each of these three stories I was paid $100.

This is also the going rate that, as publisher , I paid for all fiction submissions, and most other contributions, during my tenure at Drummer.

Interestingly it is also the amount I have been offered for the piece I recently contributed to an issue of Drummer, and the amount I have been promised for each of several other submissions I have made to various other publishers in the past few months.

It was not until I began to work on the article for Drummer that I realized that, in spite of drastic inflation, great increases in paper costs, printing costs, postage and other distribution costs, AND in cover and subscription prices, writers and other contributors are still receiving exactly the same payments they were nearly 15 years ago.

This is not unique to Desmodus, it is the same with all other similar publishers. Even to someone who was a publisher, and is fully cognizant with the economics of the situation, this does not seem right!

I have come full circle. I began in this business as a writer, looking for someone to publish my work. I was delighted when, in 1973, Larry Townsend first accepted fiction by Fledermaus into one of his Treasury of SM volumes. And, like most other such writers, I have been happy to be published by anyone who would. Now I would be happy to have my contributions recognized for their worth.

I hope that all publishers will reexamine their contributor payment schedules.

I wish to take this opportunity to not only thank you and your staff for Drummer but also to say a special thanks for Drummer #185. I try not to let my own personal preferences taint my reviews of the books and videos submitted to me. But I try to give readers some valuable information and I am committed to continuing this information exchange. So without further ado, let me warn you about a couple of videos that were brought to my attention.

The videos Atlanta Knights and Force Recon Part I produced by Chip Weichelt and Fleetwood Productions are really nothing more than low-budget karate type films.

The storyline reads like a day in the life of some straight macho motorcycle cops. Apparently the cops and the S.W.A.T. team are real, but who cares. There is one short scene where martial arts master David Munroe and his big-haired girlfriend climb into the shower together to clean up for a date that never happens because of all the nonstop action.

If you have a die-hard uniform fetish, be my guest and let me know what you think, but my recommendation is to rent a Chuck Norris or Steven Segall movie and get your money's worth.

Games People Play

On a completely different note, Atlas! Productions has my vote of approval for their Truths & Dares starring Cougar Cash, Clark Kent, James Dane, Harry Crews, Alvin Eros, Valente Valentino and Mikos.

Piss Scene Safety

Watersports is one of the more exotic and forbidden areas of SM play. Piss is warm, wet and intimate…

…but also a smelly waste product we have been taught to regard disdainfully.

Piss play carries an element of the forbidden , a legacy from childhood. A man who showers another man with his urine is sharing a secret, forbidden part of himself while also dominating the piss bottom in a way that is sexy and raunchy. As far as risk goes, piss play is safer than fucking, though not completely risk free. Toilet scenes, in which piss is ingested, are riskier than golden showers. So what technically is urine? It's a solution of water and waste products the kidneys filter out of the blood. It may also contain some infectious particles and various toxins, drugs, etc. When someone drinks piss (even his own) the kidneys must re-excrete the piss. Drinking small amounts of urine should not put a strain on healthy kidneys, although it might annoy them. Accompany- ing the piss with at least an equal volume of water will make the kidneys much less annoyed. Drinking piss from someone who drinks lots of liquid and makes dilute urine is easier on the kid-aneys than drinking concentrated urine.

A warning to gout sufferers: piss con-

≥ tains a good deal of uric acid which people with gout already have trouble expelling, ingesting even more uric ို့ acid is not adviseable.

Drugs that enter the body are expelled either through feces or urine.

Many drugs that are eliminated through urine are altered by the liver in a way that makes them inactive. Some drugs, however, pass through the kidneys in either their original form, or become more active than when ingested . How can you tell what effect residual drugs present in urine might have on a bottom who drinks piss? You may wish to ask a doctor, other health care provider, or pharmacist. Alternatively, you may wish to refer to one of several books available which list the "route of excretion" of most medications. One good reference is the Physician's Desk Reference (PDR). The section entitled

"pharmacokinetics" lists whether each drug is excreted through urine or feces and whether or not it remains active after being excreted.

Viruses and bacteria can be present in urine without being aware of it. For example, if pissed on by herpes-containing urine, the virus can penetrate the skin through a small wound, causing skin lesions called herpes gladiato-rum , sores which may recur, just like herpes on the penis or cold sores on the lip. The chances of getting hepatitis from drinking piss are really low, but exposing a microscopic cut could pass the hepatitis virus into the blood-stream . Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is also shed in the urine, sometimes for years after exposure. Both of these viruses frequently cause infection without disease ; because of this, many people are unaware that they are infectious. While there is no vaccine for CMV, one does exist for hepatitis B. Both chlamydia and gonorrhea can show up in urine; drinking this creates heightened risk for throat infections. Gonorrhea in the throat mimics the symptoms of strep throat. Both gonor- rhea and chlamydia can be hard to diagnose in the throat, especially since many doctors won't think of them unless a patient mentions having had risky oral sex.

When the top and bottom are both HIV+ it is important to be aware that there are a few fungi that can cause major infections which can be found in urine: histoplasmosis; blastomycosis; and coccidioides immitis (also known as Valley Fever). All three can be a major pain in the ass to get rid of. Information is not available as to whether or not immunosuppressed players can catch these fungi from piss play; better safe than sorry.

Conspicuous in its absence from this list is HIV. To my knowledge, the evidence on the presence of HIV in urine is inconclusive. There is no evidence of HIV ever being transmitted through urine. However, HIV likes to concentrate in the semen, and some HIV+ men with other sexually transmitted diseases can have HIV-infected white blood cells hanging around the urethra waiting to swim out in the next stream of urine. Is it possible to catch HIV from playing with urine? It's very unlikely.

I believe we are kin to the secret souls of so many cultures before ours. Our urge to pierce, tattoo, to express with our very body in such primitive ways, is deep in the genetic memories, constant and strong as the tides. It is like the urge to dance, the urge to sing. The chord it strikes resonates strongly for some of us, affecting our psyches , our spirits, and our libidos.

When the chord strikes for you, respond. Let it come out, give it your own expression . Create your own rituals. Do not stifle yourself out of fear of rejection, or because of the need to win approval. The inner spirit cannot be denied, deceived, or destroyed.

Leathersex and Spirituality

Personal ads of leathermen seeking partners , articles published in leather magazines , and conversations at leathersex parties all suggest that the past several years have been a boomtime for spiritual interests and practices in leathersex circles. Men are often seeking not just a flogging, but a ritual flogging, not just an SM scene, but a ritualized scene, meaning a scene more likely to involve spiritual experience. The magazines, obviously responding to and guiding the community they serve, are publishing pieces about transcendent experiences , the spiritual movement, and the meaning of leathersex in psychological and spiritual terms. Discussions that were once about how good a man felt after a particular scene are often conducted now in the vocabulary of spiritual practice which, only a decade ago, would have raised eyebrows in most leathersex circles.

It isn't that new kinds of inner experiences are occurring in the leathersex playroom . What has changed is a greater degree of freedom in the discussion of the experience. This, very likely, has to do with the relaxing of the Old Leather attitudes. It was considered inappropriate or foolish, perhaps even ridiculous, for bottoms to speak of enjoying the abuse they begged for as recently as the early 1970s. And any

discussion involving the word "spirit" was unlikely in most circles.

Tops have always been pretty much at ease talking about their desires. With their very closest friends, tops have talked freely about technique, but the Old Leather attitude toward any discussion of inner experience - particularly in terms that suggest a spiritual connection - had traditionally been, "I have no idea what you're talking about."

Bottoms would talk to bottoms, and what they mainly talked about in the past was the tops they knew. One of the inhibiting factors of bottom to bottom conversations in Old Leather was the certainty that anything said to a bottom could be repeated to a top if demanded, meaning that even when no tops were present, a bottom was risking ridicule by tops for mentioning the unmentionable.

Throughout the 1970s there were numerous independent movements and individuals working out and exploring the spiritual possibilities in leathersex. Geoff Mains, author of the classic Urban Aboriginals, was a very serious student of the spiritual implications of both submission and pain-bearing . Fakir Musafar (publisher of Body Play magazine and presenter of workshops all over the world) was actively pursuing the pain-related spiritual practices of traditional cultures, from the Native Americans to the Hindus of the Indian subcontinent. Purusha Larkin, the author of the infamous The Divine Androgyne, was narrowly but deeply focused on the self-realization and spiritual liberty he discovered in fisting and other such assplay. Also, small circles of leatherfolk were turning to Wicca (traditional , nature-power religions), to the resurgent religions of the Native Americans, to Caribbean religions involving Christianity but hardly relating to the mainstream of that faith, and in larger numbers to New Age spiritual practices, often personally, even eccentrically defined.

What everyone was attempting was much the same. They wanted a framework within which to understand, to communicate , and to facilitate the repetition of spiritual experiences they had (or had heard of) in leathersex. They wanted to validate their experience, and to be able to predict it or cause it to recur. Another major force involved here was the implication that experiences as intense at the ones people had with SM - usually completely unexpectedly - could be dangerous as well as

transformative in a positive sense. So, as with so much in leathersex, safety became a motive for change.

Black Leather Wings, a network of men and women involved in leathersex and related to the Radical Faeries, emerged in the late 1980s as a social forum in which people could bring their various experiences and interests, their extremely divergent backgrounds and their hopes. At gatherings (sort of faerie versions of the bike run) and at in-town meetings, the "leather faeries," as Black Leather Wings folks are often known, have given at least a certain segment of the leathersex population a comfortable context, and accommodating intersection rather than a set of doctrines.

In recent years, presentations on the spiritual dimensions of leathersex have become very popular at NLA International's annual Living in Leather conferences, in the programs of major leather / SM organizations like GMSMA in New York, and on the schedules of businesses like San Francisco's QSM set up to provide leathersex education. The word is definitely out that, although some people continue to resist the possibility of spiritual experience in the leathersex arena, it is a genuine and acceptable interest shared by a growing segment of the community.

Interview with Mark Thompson

Mark Thompson began his career in journalism at The Advocate in 1975 where he worked until 1994. Thompson's other work includes the acclaimed anthology "Gay Spirit: Myth and Meaning" (St. Martin's Press), "Leatherfolk: Radical Sex, People, Politics, and Practice" (Alyson Publications ), and "Gay Soul: Finding the Heart of Gay Spirit and Nature" (Harper). He frequently lectures on the psycho-spiritual aspects of the gay male experience. Thompson lives in Los Angeles with his long-time partner, Episcopal priest and author Malcolm Boyd, and is currently working on a new book, "Gay Body" which examines being gay through Jungian-depth psychology. Thompson is also a founding member of Black Leather Wings, a tribal group which incorporates elements of radical sexuality and ecstatic ritual with alternative forms of spirituality.

Drummer: Would you say that leathersex or SM is inherently spiritual?

Thompson: I don't see leather / SM sexuality as necessarily being an end in itself. I mean, it can be just hot sexy fun, as we all know. But to me that's just the outer form of it. The inner content of the experience itself is deeply, radically spiritual. And for anyone to say it isn't, well I just don't understand those people. I even think a lot of the Old Guard leathermen knew that, but weren't saying it, perhaps for lack of appropriate language. Or maybe they didn't want to say it because it might, in some way, seem too religious. There is a difference , of course, between religion and spirituality .

Drummer: Can you be a bit more specific about how you see SM as spiritual?

Thompson: If you're part of a leather scene that really works, you know that it's a sacred experience. You're peeling back layers of ego and identity - the veil of illusion of what we think life is about or who we think we are. Through leathersex, we come to see ourselves in new ways. A leather experience is a real stripping down to zero, to the bone. And that's, of course, what any authentic spiritual experience is about. So I see leather sexuality as a shattering of our illusions and self-created realities. SM is a way of getting beyond these constructions to something deeper - rearranging the parts to come to some new understanding of the Self, which is spiritual growth.

I've always viewed the Top as a shaman. One of the basic premises of shamanism is the cycle of death and rebirth. In shamanic stories, the heroic traveller is often dismembered , taken apart before he is put back together again. Now, this is completely analogous to what happens in a good leather scene: you are taken apart, ritually dismembered, and then you're put back together again, but in a new way. You've faced the darkness and a hidden part of yourself has been made more aware. When you come back up and out of the experience , you're more whole - you're stronger, more aware of the games people play around you. That's why I think some leather people tend to be a bit ahead in the consciousness game. When I got into leather, two things happened in my life that really delighted me: my sense of humor improved, as did my political awareness.

Drummer: How did you become attracted to the Radical Faerie movement?

Thompson: I've always been a hybrid person . I don't think a lot of people in the leather scene necessarily understood my interest in the Radical Faerie scene. I was one of the first Faeries, in the sense that I attended the first conference for Radical Faeries in Arizona in 1979. Before then, I was very actively involved in other kinds of spiritual pursuits, such as Zen Buddhism,

Drummer: So you were entering the leather scene and the Radical Faerie scene simultaneously?

Thompson: Yes. It wasn't until around 1978 that I became really self-accepting about my SM interests. I went to the first Faerie gathering with a few pieces of leather in my bag. Purusha Larkin, the Divine Androgyne, was at the gathering and he presented a slide show. Here we all were at a gay ashram, a little oasis in the middle of a big desert, and there was this man giving a slide show about the cosmic consciousness possible through fist fucking and other forms of radical body play. I was fascinated because I'd already had some of these experiences and I knew what he was talking about.

Drummer: Were there other men at this first gathering who shared your interest in SM?

Thompson: There were a few other shamanically spiritual leather people there. But we didn't really talk about it because the Faerie scene was a bit more matrilineally focused. There were a lot of men running around in dresses. There's nothing more hot to me than a leatherman wearing a sarong, mixing masculine and feminine. But within the Faerie movement, there was much more of an exclusive focus on the Great Mother and the Goddess.

Drummer: How, then, did it come to be that a Leather Faerie movement was born?

Thompson: Throughout the '80's, the Radical Faerie movement continued to grow across the U.S. There have been dozens of gatherings. A lot of leathermen would go, but there would never be much leather activity. Finally, in 1988, at a Faerie gathering in Wolf Creek, Oregon, about a dozen of us formed a circle in the woods and had an SM play party! It was reported back to

us the next morning, that a third of the camp was awake all night, wondering what the hell we were doing, another third was fuming in their tents, and the rest were beating off - they were so turned on. That was the beginning of the Leather Faerie movement. It happened that night in the redwood grove in Faerie land.

Drummer: Describe the early Leather Faerie movement.

Thompson: Well, the next year, we met at Rancho Cicada, a gay-owned retreat in the hills near Sacramento. There were about forty of us. Fakir Musafar had quickly become a part of what we were doing and he brought a great deal of what you might call "spiritual technology" with him. He brought all these wonderful, intense rituals, like the Ball Dance and the Sun Dance. Ganymede brought with him elements of Wiccan ritual and I continued to emphasize Jungian philosophy and more gay male centered approaches. Although women gradually came aboard, the movement did start out as a gay male experience.

Drummer: How, specifically, is the Leather Faerie movement different from the Radical Faerie movement?

Thompson: The Leather Faerie movement branched out of the Radical Faerie movement and we have adopted many things from the Radical Faeries, like the heart circle and use of a talisman. We retained some of the feyness, but it was quickly blended with SM practice. Another major difference is that gay men and leatherdykes have been mixing - not only our presence, but our sexualities. It's fascinating that we're playing together, but still maintaining our lesbian and gay identities. Over the years, we have also included non-gay people , you might say queer straight people. So what we are is spiritually oriented, kinky queer people of various genders and orientations . The bonds of leather are thicker than any identity construction. We view ourselves as a tribe.

Black Leather Wings (BLW) is centered in northern California and meets regularly. We have annual summer gatherings. Many of us are combining this with other things. The whole point of this is combining and synthesizing elements, ever creating a new whole, or a new totality. It's an ongoing organic process of individuation.

Drummer: I'd like to get back to the concept of masculinity within the leather,

Radical Faerie, and Leather Faerie movements . It seems that it would be difficult to reconcile the images of the hard, stoic leatherman and the soft, feminine Faerie man.

Thompson: Well, that sense of masculine initiation was one of the things that attracted me to the leather scene. It provided a form of initiation into my masculinity that I never got from my dad or from society . In saying that, I don't mean to imply that it needs to be macho. There's a big difference between all that macho masculine stuff and masculinity. Just as there's a big difference between putting on leather and being into leather.

Drummer: Talk a bit more about that.

Thompson: A lot of men are out trying to mirror this sort of glum, stern, determined image of a leatherman, but that's ridiculous , because that isn't necessarily the real thing. And I don't believe it ever was.

One thing we've done in the Leather Faeries is to incorporate a real sense of play and humor, which is how I think the original leather clubs were - a bunch of men letting their inner boys go off into the woods and have a great time.

Drummer: Do you think the leather community , as a whole, is becoming more spiritually oriented?

Thompson: There's much more receptivity and willingness to discuss spiritual issues. It's been necessary for us to create our own language, our own system of values, references , and words. That's one invaluable contribution that the Leather Faerie movement is making to the community.

Drummer: What do you see as the next step for the leather community, as a whole?

Thompson: The leather community needs to talk about its collective spiritual life. It's good to talk about techniques and role playing and what's the proper way to fist someone, but there has to be more talk on a deeper level. I know there's a huge appetite for it. People want and need this level of discourse. Geoff Mains talks about this very well in Urban Aboriginals. The leather community has to come out of the closet around spirituality or we will have no lasting ground to stand on. Without a common language to talk about these elusive issues, people will remain stunted by shame, doubt, and shadow-ridden behavior. Pride in itself is not enough.

The Gay Pagans by Jonathan Maedwand

The cane slices its way into my ass. I'm screaming, and I can't hear the drums for the pounding in my heart. Slowly the words of the chant filter through to my brain, punctuated by cane strokes. "Horned one, lover, son, leaper in the corn, deep in the mother, die and be reborn." I have a vision of my body in blue flames, with lightning traveling from the plug in my ass up to and exploding through the top of my head. I have been pagan for many years, but this is the first time I have used SM as a ritual tool.

The basis of paganism is that all forms of life are sacred, and that all acts of pleasure and transformation are the rituals of the gods. Many pagan traditions around the world involve heavy body play and submission to a greater will as self-discipline, from the taipusam festivals in Malaysia and India to the British Gardinerian prac-tise of scourging. What had for quite a while been very underground in the gay pagan communities is becoming more and more known and talked about at festival workshops, and in print.

There is an ethic in the pagan world of "do as thou wilt, and it harm none." Many pagans view SM as self harm or violence - and this topic has fueled heated discussions and on-going debates across the country.

It has been difficult for gay pagans to perform rituals in dungeons without running into ridicule and confusion, especially if any mention of a goddess is made. Granted, most men don't expect to hear Hindu or Celtic chanting in the back room. Yet over the past few years, more and more pagan leathermen have come out of the broom closet and found each other. There are now several sources through which gay pagans can find each other and share their knowledge and experiences.

The Crucible, one of the first and best magazines for pagan leathermen, has been published for several years now. Informative, and covering a multitude of traditions, The Crucible not only carries articles and really hot fiction, but working ritual suggestions and descriptions. The ritual described at the beginning was based on a ritual from this 'zine, where I became the cauldron for the energies of five glorious topmen.

From Canada is the newsletter "On Wings Of Leather," published by Northwind, Essays, fiction, poems, and pic-

tures! On Wings Of Leather is also one of the few pansexual queer newsletters around.

For glossy pictures, stories from around the world, and intense personal experience accounts, Body Play and Modern Primitives Quarterly, published by Fakir Musafar are excellent. Musafar also just released "Body Play the Book: Volume One."

On the pagan front, there are two 'zines that are leather friendly; the Lavender Pagan Newsletter in California and the Queer Pagan Newsletter from New York. Both have published articles and stories about ritual SM, and both are committed to exploring gay magic and mythology.

There are few books out that deal specifically with leather and ritual, but what is out there is excellent. "Leatherfolk," edited by Mark Thompson, is an amazing collection of stories and accounts of journeys and transformations through leather ritual. Its a great read, even if you're not gay pagan.

There are several people who are currently offering services as SM shamans. Most of them seem to be in the San Francisco Bay area, although there have been several intriguing ads in The Crucible from around the country. Finding someone who can be both top and priest responsibly is no easy task, especially if you are working within a specific tradition. Some of the SM priests I know of also work with dykes, and there are a number of women leather shamans and circles.

There are currently only two semi-public ritual SM groups that I know of, and both are members only. Black Leather Wings originally was an offshoot of the Radical Faeries, with open gatherings and rituals, but they have become a closed circle over the past couple of years. The Radical Faeries themselves, while not SM oriented, are dedicated to faggot spirituality, with spiritual sanctuary land all over the country. There is nothing quite like being beaten while tied to an ancient tree in the middle of the forest , I promise.

In New Orleans there is a cluster of chaos circles known as Zcluster. The TAZ circle of Zcluster is a coven of ritual SM chaos magicians and pagans, and seems to be the only contact available in the south.

Last month was the first ever all-gender Queer Spirit gathering in Northern California. There were amazing workshops on ritual SM and shadow play, and an intense ritual. Rumor also has it that there will be a Leather Facrie gathering in Oregon sometime next year put on by

some of the same people from Queer Spirit.

I have a vision of leather pagans from all over the country gathering together to transform ourselves and the world. There is magic to be made in what we do. The old gods are alive and dancing with us. May the Horned One bless you all with strength and pleasure.

The most popular meeting spot in the future for men into leather and SM may not be bars and playrooms but cyberspace. Despite threats of censorship, computer bulletin boards, the Internet and other online computer services already attract a significant number of gay men (and lesbians) into alternative sex. The number of services is growing daily, according to Race Bannon and Keith Sklower, who recently conducted a seminar for leathermen interested in getting hooked into cyberspace.

"In many ways, sex has driven the Internet up to asserted point," this Bannon, publisher of "The Daedalus Press. Internet has become a way for people with unconven- tional sexual tastes to meet. It's particularly popular with people who are reluctant to make their preferences known in public or who live in more isolated areas."

The number of fetish-related resources available online is surprisingly large. A compendium of resources prepared by Mistress Blanca and Peter (Green Way) lists several hundred chat lines, mailing lists, archives, bibliographies, news groups and publications related to various sex, gender and fetish topics. Many items on the list are broad categories that themselves contain numerous subgroups and subtopics. New leather or SM resources are being added at the rate of a dozen or so per month. Although the majority of listings are either, straight or not gay-specific , Bannon and Sklower called the number of gay-male leather or SM listings "fairly sizable."

According to Bannon, online networking is especially valuable for those who have neither the time nor the inclination to spend several hours per week, if not per night, in bars in an effort to connect with others who share an interest in leather and SM.

"It's convenient. We're in a very fast environment, and many of us just don't want to have to spend a lot of time in bars," he commented.

Sklower, who has worked for 20 years with UNIX, the operating system that drives the Internet, said online connecting offers particular advantages for those in the leather / SM scene who tend to be shy or reserved in public.

"It's easier to be bold online," he declared, acknowledging that he sometimes finds himself stammering in the presence of strangers. "I'm easily intimidated by other people . Online I get a chance to meet men I'd never talk to in person."

Many online connections , he added, resulted in in-person satisfying encounters - they did not remain computer-screen fantasies, a common worry

A thousand kinky scenes bloom! BY SAM SANCHEZ hen gay men of a certain age talk about the good old days, they reminisce about a time when the leather and fetish scene was a secret society hidden from public view. Bars had no signs on their doors. You had to know so-and-so to get in. And, most importantly , you had to be dressed according to the strict macho code of the time. Sadomasochism, piercing, bondage, and other taboos were acted out in dungeons and basement beer joints, away from the scrutiny of disapproving eyes. In the good old days being queer meant keeping your fetish life covert.

HIV toppled that carefully constructed leather and fetish society of the good old days. Sexual practices were held up to the glare of sex-monitor flashlights and health-department inspections. As it turns out, the sexual lifestyle of the good old days was hazardous to everyone's health. This is not a moral judgement. It's just that today, HIV transforms every sexual contact into a balancing act and requires constant vigilance. For many younger gay men, the thrill of total sexual abandonment , fostered by the queer sex scene of the 70s and 80s, seems a tainted legacy.

Men who complain that today's gay fetish scene is different are right. It is different. Leather is only one of the many fetish trappings queers use to express the new and primitive sexuality of the 90s, one which is free from the role-playing and elitism of the past. The techniques born in the kinky sex play of the first leather men have evolved and blossomed into the thou- sands of perversions gay men enjoy.

In their search to make sex more exciting as well as safe, queers have actually become kinkier and in some cases, more spiritual. Piss, rubber, bondage, piercing, tattoos, and other practices are common but seem tame when compared to being flogged with shredded PVC pipe by a hundred chanting tribalists, or dancing with a cage of sharp spears on your chest and shoulders.

In the old days, certain articles of clothing were used to show what type of sex a gay man wanted. Today, many of the external trappings of the queer fetish scene have been assimilated into the mainstream. Black leather harnesses were featured recently in the collections of fashion designer Gianni Versace. Drag queen Ru Paul is spokesperson for a product distributed by cosmetics giant Estee Lauder. Cat Woman and Madonna undulate in rubber suits. And adolescent models in Calvin Klein blue jean ads sport pierced noses, nipples, and bellybuttons. Overexposed and sanitized by the masses, these fetish elements now seem meaningless to the men who once used them when cruising for sex.

Fetishism is influencing art and performance as well. In New York City, two art galleries are exhibiting drawings by tattoo artists, elevating the custom into a new-age folk art. Who would have thought tattoos, long considered the mark of sailors, freaks or those on the fringe of society, would one day be the subject of articles by art critics in the New York Times? Around the country, performance artists like Bob Flanagan, who is elaborately pierced, and Ron Athey, who is covered with tattoos, blaze a trail using their uniquely decorated physiques as living art. Others, like San Francisco's Keith Hennessey, use needles and blood in their performance pieces.

The scope and breadth of today's fetish scene points to a renaissance in gay sexuality. Despite the obstacles presented by HIV, gay men have created thousands of new and exciting ways to act out their fantasies. They have forged a new approach to sexual fulfillment . No, it isn't like the old days. But it sure is every bit as exciting.
