DRUMMER COVER STOR n 1965, the Janus Society of Philadelphia published a small magazine entitled Drum. The name referred to American poet Henry David Thoreau's quote: "If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music he hears, however measured for woung Los Angeles publisher named John Embry recalled the Thoreau In Sold and which reference for an entertainment magazine which he was going to publish was to be called Drumsticks. Embry eventually settled on the name Drumster. When that publishing effort failed he used the anner again on a newspaper with the banner H.E.L.P. Drummer which also fared poorly.
Success came in 1975, when Embry's plans to do another newspaper fell through and he decided to dust off the Drummer nameplate. Throughout its first issues, Drummer carried the words "Leather Fraternity" on the cover under the logo referring to the then-popular newsletter that had been incorporated into the magazine.
Over the years the Drummer name has shared the spotlight with a thematic statement , usually placed above or below the logo. Issue 63 reads "Drummer: The International Magazine For The Macho Male." That slogan changes to "Drummer: America's Mag For The Macho Male" in issue 74. By issue 97 the line becomes "Drummer: The 'Instead Of Magazine For The Macho Male"
Slogans were dropped in the late 80's when Drummer was published by Tony DeBlase, a.k.a Fledermaus. In 1992, when the magazine changed ownership again, publisher Martijn Bakker officially rechristened it International Drummer to reflect its growing audience and global distribution.
FATHER OF THEM ALL by Joseph W. Bean
Drummer didn't just blaze a trail for gay male publications, it created a world in which they could exist. When Drummer began in the summer of 1975, it was a bold undertaking.
Drummer was unique, but not entirely alone. Brentwood published "macho gay" magazines in the mid 70s, and Target was around creating both films and print. Action Male and Men of Action were on the horizon as was Gay Bondage. The Athletic Model Guild was going strong and getting bolder about complete nudity and explicit sexuality. Young gay men today have probably never heard of or seen copies of these publications. But they know the name Drummer because it alone has survived.
The newly-bold gay mags of the mid-70s scared distributors, retailers, and buyers who were a little nervous about them. Many of the mags were "macho" gay, a phrase which was no longer oxymoronic and not yet humorous . The newcomers were not focused enough to hold readers from issue to issue. Some, like Gay Bondage, were too focused for that then undeveloped niche market. Drummer hung in and was poised for success.
Drummer's focus was narrow enough: gay male leather men with an active interest in rough, raunchy, radical sex. It was consistent enough to hold readers from issue to issue, but varied enough to shock or agitate a few readers with every issue. And, very importantly, the shocks, planned or completely accidental, were the stuff of bar talk and cocktail party conversation .
The first four issues of Drummer featured slavery, SM, incest, phone sex, piss play, fist fucking, art, movies, plays, porn, and, to see what buttons really could be pushed, a piece on necrophilia as a fetish. You couldn't say that these four thin issues of Drummer had something for everyone, but they had something for anyone in the audi-
ence Drummer wanted to address. In no time at all Drummer was THE gay male magazine remaining in the niche of SM and bondage, perhaps best seen as the whole field of male radical sex.
The move toward masculinity by gay magazines happened more because of Drummer than any other publication. In those days, the prevailing image in the media of gay males had been young, dangerously young, smooth, sweet faced, and (believe me) always smiling. The very existence of Drummer magazine, which explored a sexuality that values experience above all else, began to undermine the monopoly of inexperienced, shiny smooth, and tiresomely youthful models .
The change to a more realistic and more mature male image began with the first issue which introduced readers to the art of Steve Masters' older men who were far less polished than the models in other mags. It also featured at least one Target model who caused a stir among my friends. The man was older, yes, but also hairy, smoking a cigar, and uncut. While the text tore into taboos like a plow hitting anthills, the art and photography created options and acceptance for men who until then had never seen themselves reflected in erotic media.
The first generation of Drummer's offspring are the spinoff publications that were created by the publisher and Titles included: Drummer staff. Daddies of which there were three issues: Foreskin Quarterly which sprang out of the marriage of Bud Berkley and the Drummer regulars; Mach which was called Drummer's big brother; and Tough Customers which started as pages devised by Jack Fritscher, and became a new publication when Paul Martin and I hatched the idea years later.
The various Drummer annuals and photo books played important roles as well. Intentionally or not, they often pushed the limits, focusing on a subject more closely than it was possible in the
magazine. Drummer Marches On, for example, was a full scale immersion into military fetishism, doing for men in uniform what Drummer Daddies did for older men. Down White Boy slapped us in the face with the fetish of black skin and the fabled black cock, calling it "reverse slavery" and having the models speak in racist slang. Chain Reactions was a spectacular celebration of group sex. Manhood Rituals was a major soaking in the variants of the power exchange, establishing as nothing before, the sense that massive muscles were an access to the dominant role. Muscles, huge muscles, were instantly recognized as a fetish feature capable of elevating an otherwise ordinary man to the status of Super Top. Slaves for Sale gave everyone permission to ignore the obvious and be a slave if they wanted to be one. Muscle man, black man, giant-cock man, all could be slave boys.
This catalog could go on and on, but it needn't. Drummer became the premiere image factory for masculine gay men. It provided jerk-off imagery for vanilla boys and kinky men alike, inspired gay advertising, and challenged heterosexual views of what gay men were like.

EDITORIAL IMPACT by Tony DeBlase
John Embry founded Drummer in 1975 and was its publisher through issue 98 in 1986. In this capacity, as its editor, and as a writer contributing anonymously , or as Robert Payne, he is the main person responsible for shaping the magazine initially and in modifying it, or allowing it to be modified, as it evolved.
The first 11 issue were edited by Jeanne Barney, who had been writing an advice column, "Smoke from Jeanne's Lamp" for the Advocate. She continued as the Ann Landers of the leather set in Drummer. During her tenure, Drummer covered a variety of fantasies, including water sports, branding, piercing, shaving, scat, bestiality and necrophilia. Special features included Movie Maybem, Bill Ward's drawings Famous Sadists of History, crossword puzzles and erotic Cornect the dots illustrations. During her editorship Drummer's emphasis on SM action was heavier than it has been anytime since.
Issues 12 through 18 were edited by Robert Payne. With Drummer 19, Jack Fritscher came upon the scene. Under Jack's direction SM per se became less prominent. Rough and raunch male / male sexuality, often written by Jack himself, became the main theme. David Hurles' photos and A. Jay's drawing characterized this era. "Tough Shit" appeared in Drummer 21 and "Tough Customers" followed in issue 25. Fritscher's last issue was Drummer 30.
Issues 31 through 39 list Robert Payne as editor and John Rowberry as assignments editor. Rowberry went on to serve as editor until being promoted to associate publisher with Drummer 49, a position he held through issue 86.
Rowberry's association on Drummer began early. The magazine published his poem "White Death," in issue 5, his review of "The Story of Harold" in issue 6, and serialized "The Great SM Murder Mystery," in issues 9 through 11. After joining the Drummer staff, Rowberry continued to publish poetry. new items and occasionally longer articles . He was particularly known for his excellent reviews of books, films, and videos. Rowberry's long status as a contributor and, more importantly, his very long period on the staff have made him second only to John (Robert Payne) Embry in the influence he had on the magazine.
No single images says Drummer more than a Bill Ward drawing. John
Embry saw Ward's work in a British gay magazine and sought permission to reprint it. "King" appeared in issues five through 10. Drummer 11 saw the birth of "Drum" a comic strip created especially for Drummer. Ward's drawings have frequently illustrated fiction and also appeared in house ads. Artwork by illustrator Bud appeared on the cover of issue 1 and he frequently illustrated fiction and other features in the early issues. Bud's men could be cute and cuddly, but usually had a wild and wooly look that was unique.
Bishop illustrated several stories in early issues though he is best known for his wild bondage drawing in straight SM publications. Harry Bush never drew specifically for Drummer but his work was used extensively in the earlier issues.
Next to Bill Ward and perhaps Harry Bush, the artist most closely associated with Drummer in the mind of early
readers is A. Jay (Al Shapiro). A. Jay served as art director of Drummer from issue 16 through 33. A. Jay's "Adventures of Harry Chess" amused, titillated and made political statements all at the same time. His illustrations for stories and ads had exactly the right look for editor Jack Fritscher's version of Drummer.
Ken Wood's illustrations are scattered throughout the first 50 issues. Charles Musgrave first appeared in issue 35 with drawings of bound hands. His depiction of nudes with beer cans were featured prominently in later issues. And Sean's "Erotic Dots" were a unique and popular feature of early issues.
Works by Etienne, Tom of Finland, Rex, Domino, deMullotto, Adam, Zach, Uyvari, Brick Walden, Martin of Holland, and Nigel Kent appeared in the first 50 issues but to the best of my knowledge, none of them were specifi-cover of Drummer 100 did feature an original drawing by Rex. The Hun's work first appeared in Drummer 15, Matt appeared in issue 21 and Cavelo in 27, but it wasn't until after issue 50 that they produced work especially for Drummer.
Tony DeBlase, a.k.a. Fledermaus, was publisher of Drummer from 1986- 1993. This article appeared in Drummer issue 100.
A LITERATE HARD-ON by Wickie Stamps
The famous gay novel "Mr. Benson" first appeared in Drummer issue 29. The author, John Preston ak.a. Jack Prescott) was living in New York's East Village and working as a temp typist for Church Women United.
"Mr. Benson," recounts the tales of Jamie, a young man who haunts the discos of New York, in search of a master . The novel was serialized in subsequent issues of Drummer, and gained cult status in the gay men's SM scene. As each issue of Drummer rolled off the presses, gays, and lesbians, stood in line at bookstores throughout the U.S., waiting for the pext installment. And t- shirts, reading Looking for Mr. Benson were frequently worn in San Francisco's Castro district. "Ed White might have the crowd from the New York Review of Books, but I was the star of Drummer,"
Preston recounts in "My Life as a Pornographer," his last book.
"Mr. Benson" was published as a book in 1983 and received the dubious honor of being recognized by Penthouse magazine as one of the ten best SM works ever written. Preston found success in mainstream publishing, editing over 40 books, including the the gay series "Flesh and the Word."
Preston's career, particularly his exploration of pornography, lead him into a friendship with fellow writer Ann Rice who was publishing pornography "Ann and I developed fictional worlds where a private organization of people committed to sexual extreme and experimentation were able to explore the limits of their fantasies," said Preston. Rice's philosophy that pornography is a place where one visits, not where one lives spurred Preston on to imagining an escapist world of gay male sexuality devoid of repression.
Preston acknowledged that more important than his own career was the cadre of porn writers, all of whom appeared in the pages of Drummer, and who emerged during the 70's and 80's. Writers like: Steven Saylor (a.k.a. Aaron Travis), creator of "The Blue Light," Larry Townsend, author of "The Leatherman's Handbook," Samuel Steward, creator of the Phil Andros novellas; and Robert Payne, author of the infamous "Care and Training of the Male Slave."
According to Preston the work of Drummer's early writers was more than just self-indulgent jerk-off fantasizing. "We, the authors, were participant/ observers in the sexual life that was developing. We were going to the Mine Shaft in New York, or The Slot in San Francisco. We were giving form to the ideas and images which were part of our lives. We were articulating moment of freedom and revolution that we were sharing with our readers."

As the oldest living Drummer editor, I personally testify that everything in the 1970s was grand indeed. Everyone on board was a star. In those days it seemed gay men lived for the day with no thought of tomorrow. They were such innocents that most had no idea they had fathered a whole new lifestyle.
Now is now, but then! Then! Hot was the tempo when we partied on sexual liberation's maiden voyage. We cruised the decks of this ship of sex, from its upper class to lower class, down to the elbow grease of the ship's hold where muscular men stripped down to jock-straps and boots. We sailed a sea of sex and art, like gods, until the iceberg of a cold plague ripped through the immune systems of nearly everyone. Some of us were spared: a lifeboat with a small band of survivors.
Hundreds of men and women have contributed to the nearly 20,000 pages this anniversary issue celebrates. They are a tribute to the fact that through the last 20 years Drummer has endured longer than any one person and is stronger than any attack of censorship or virus.
In 1977, after Drummer moved to San Francisco, my intent as it's editor was to invite and include the wisdom of established gay minds, celebrities, and icons while encouraging the energy of the new talent emerging from the closets opened by gay liberation. In the 70s few men took the time to write, draw, or take photographs. They were distracted by the orgy of sex, drugs and rock n' roll. In those days, we had to convince potential contributors that Drummer was a magazine by and about masculine men. Drummer's premise seemed radical in an age of disco bunnies.
We worked the crowds at the bars. baths, beds, cafes, and after-hours clubs in search of new talent to fill each issue. The collaborative effort included art director A. Jay's designs, reviews by
Ed Franklin, plays by George Birimisa, fiction by Drummer publisher John (Robert Payne) Embry, as well as my own writing and photographs. In those early issues Drummer introduced a list of new fetishes to its gay audience: cigars ; rubber; prisons; ex-cons; body building; daddies; sons; fisting; tit torture ; water sports; and gay sports at a time when all sports were straight. New descriptions were coined for the Drummer vocabulary: consensuality; mutuality; perversatility; homomas-culinity .
Drummer-allied artists, writers, gallery owners, and sex stars created a new gay male pop culture. The men who founded the leather bars and clubs which Drummer reviewed, and whose advertising supported the magazine, are the men who created the Tool Box, the Mineshaft, the Ambush, the Brig, Man's Country, St. Mark's Baths, and the Catacombs. These artists and businesses , along with the bike and fetish clubs, were in their own way the celebrity stars of Drummer.
Readers and fans of Drummer have no idea how immensely difficult it is to pull together even one issue of a magazine with all its elements of writing, illustration, photography, design, editing , advertising, and subscriptions. An editor is to a magazine what a director is to a movie. Editor-in-chief is a wonderful and terrible job. At its best, it's collaborative dysfunction, just like opera and professional baseball. In publishing, strong editors who are nice are often dismissed as weak, and edi-

Actually, all persons who have contributed anything to the actual pages of Drummer during the first 20 years deserve a trophy. The publishers, editors, writers and all the vast talents, sit stored and storied like so many Indians in the cupboards of my mind and heart.
A. Jay used to tease me because he saw the cultural foolishness of trying to be the editor for a masculine-identified magazine in a world identified with Bette and Barbara. Surrounded by lisping gay mags, we tried to create in enjoyed erotic literature with SM and American culture. So with both literature and leather in the repertoire, we developed a Drummer style of writing that in those days was referred to as "Leather Lit."
Drummer has never really been fiction so much as a documentary of the evolving leather scene. The cocky heart

AN IMMACULATE CONCEPTION?
Unlike popular conceptions, Drummer was not born like something in an Andy Hardy movie, with lots of enthusiasm and offers of Judy Garland's garage for a theater . It wasn't even like Shel Silverstein's wonderful concept of Playboy's beginning with all the fellas standing around the steps of a Chicago brownstone deciding who was going to be the editor, the art director and who would recruit the centerfolds.
Drummer was conceived in Los Angeles
on a Saturday morning in 1975 when my lover Don was out on one of his interminable disappearances. It was a solitary, if not immaculate, conception in the form of an ad in the Leather Fraternity newsletter I was putting together. The publication was already running eight to twelve pages. Why not embellish it and make it some sort of a small magazine? What the hell, I had always been a frustrated publisher. So I pasted together a half-page pitch for something christened Drummer with little, if any, idea, what it would or should look like.
Fate lent a hand, or at least dealt one. David Goodstein bought Dick Michael's Advocate, fired the entire staff and moved it from Los Angeles to Northern California. I connected with the discarded staff and we began a series of meetings to see about continuing the paper its present format, as the Alternate (my choice). Those meetings with the ex-staff of the Advocate proved to be first frustrating, then impossible. So it evolved that their crowd and mine went our separate ways.
Even back then we perceived that history was about to be made. I instinctively sensed some inner need to be around and help record it, perhaps to make a little of it myself. All things considered, instead of the Alternate, I decided on Drummer, a title I had unsuccessfully used twice before in the early 70s.
While working on that first Drummer, I faced a long series of lonesome sunrises. Don was in the hospital about to have exploratory surgery. It was darkly mysterious and frightening.
The first Drummer came off the press on June 23, 1975, Don's and my second anniversary. The magazine was bound by hand, then trimmed, and delivered with two roses in a gold box to Don's hospital room. That night I learned the doctors had discovered cancer in the pulmonary lining of his left lung. The best they could offer was a maximum life expectancy of two years. My golden boy would soon be gone from the world. All this happened on the day the first issue of Drummer magazine was unleashed on an unsuspecting public.
I was determined that the second issue of Drummer would come off its own presses. Jack Yancey, my new vice-president , bought half interest in my mail order business which helped me make a living. We loosely formed a printing company . Jeannie Barney, my partner in the Advocate negotiations volunteered to edit the fledgling Drummer.
Despite production delays due to a drunken pressman, Drummer did well. When issue 5 sold out, we knew we were on the right track. We contacted Someday Distributors which at the time distributed the Los Angeles Free Press and the Advocate. Someday saw a potential in Drummer and, of course, didn't bother to tell us that we were not charging them enough for it in proportion to its cover price. It never occurred to us. There was nothing around to work from as a guide, or if there was, we were oblivious to it. During that dreariest year of my life, the one thing that kept me going was creating those early Drummers.
If there are regrets in my life-and there have got to be some -I regret waiting so long to move from Los Angeles to San Francisco. In 1977 it was agreed that the time had come to leave the City of Angels for the City of St. Francis.
What happened in 1977 could fill a book. We hired A. Jay's friend Jack Fritscher as editor-in-chief and bought a building on Harriet street which became home for the magazine.
Drummer reached its first pinnacle in the mid-80s. When it outgrew Harriet Street, we moved to a place on Folsom street. Later on, we found a building on Natoma street with a great loft where we filmed videos. There was the Drummer Club at 11th and Folsom, not to mention the Mr. Drummer competitions which grew to rival Chicago's Mr. International Leather contest.
The Alternate, the newspaper, finally came into being, which Drummer's success supported. There was also Mach magazine, designed to take some of the wind out of Honcho's sails. The rest of the roster included Manifest, FQ (Foreskin Quarterly) and a raft of specials. We tried paperback book publishing, starting with the pacesetting "Mr. Benson" by John Preston,"The Brig" by Mason Powell, and "Slaves of the Empire" by Drummer assistant editor Aaron Travis.
It was a magical time in gay publishing . Drummer's acceptance spawned a myriad of competing publications because it pioneered a new and manly gay male mystique. Every subscription, every manuscript from an as-yet unpublished author, every letter to the editor-complementary or not- was an increasing sign that our audience was substantial and growing.
The most gratifying correspondence came from readers across the U.S. who had long considered themselves the only queer in town with their particular fetish. When they discovered themselves in Drummer they knew they were far from alone, wherever they lived.

Police closed the Triangle, a local gay leather bar, after undercover officers reported they interrupted sex between customers during a recent raid. According to Out Front, Denver Mayor Wellington Webb issued a statement emphasizing the police actions do not represent an attack on the gay community but only an effort to enforce city and state ordinances banning sex in businesses that serve alcohol and banning unsafe sex. Members of the city's vice squad assured the gay com- munity it was not being specially targeted and called for gays to help his department by reporting illegal sexual activities. "Citizen witnesses are needed to show cause, which enables vice officers to take action," said Lt. Marc Vasquez.

When the Old Guard Was Young
Neither young fantasies nor old stories portray leather as it was.
BY JACK RINELLA y first encounter with Drummer magazine in 1978 showed me a world filled with the kind of men I had always wanted to know, to fuck, to become. Drummer intoduced me to a way of life defined by experience and the wildest fantasies come-to-life. It was a world with a secret wisdom.
From the vantage point of 1995 we can look back on those years with nostalgia . Young men wonder what it was like in pre-AIDS days when sex was rampant. Older men pine for the old days when boys earned their leathers and clubs were the center of the lifestyle. But neither young fantasies nor old stories portray leather as it was.
During the 50s, the leather lifestyle grew slowly and quietly. It was founded by men who preferred their sex partners to be masculine, rather than the more feminine characterization that was popular among inverts, as homosexuals of that time were called.
The release of the movie "The Wild One" with Marlo Brando in 1954 gave impetus to the image of the leather-clad rebel. His macho attitude and motorcycle apparel inspired the way new leather men dressed. If you wanted leather, you had to search out a bike shop and buy the real thing. The "real thing" in those days was usually no more than a jacket and boots. Arm bands, harnesses, caps, and pants are later additions. There were no leather bars. Instead, our leather forefathers sought each other in the taverns of rough neighborhoods.
Fraternity was what it was about in those days. There were no classifieds, no phone lines, no contests, no bulletin boards. Leather men met by word of mouth, or by more creative means. A network developed which referred men to other men.
The 60s, of course, were known for the sexual revolution and a big part of that revolution was gay. Within that cultural context, leather took shape. Leather bars opened across the country. By the advent of the 70s the climate was set for explosive growth.
What began as rough sex between friends or tricks evolved into the scene we've immortalized in our memories. AIDS disrupted and altered the lifestyle, robbing it of scores of dedicated men.
By and large, today's leather lacks the intimacy, initiation, and elitism of the 60s and 70s. Men parade in black leather only to stand and model. At best, they're cruising for a kinky scene. At worst, they have no idea what the their clothing represents. I get upset about the pushiness of bottoms, the lack of manners, the presumptive attitudes that seem so common. It's then that I find myself thinking like the Old Guard, pining for the old days.
I recently attended the opening night of an SM art show. It was a pan-gendered event filled with men and women into the widest variety of kink. Leather was certainly in abundance, but there was also a smattering of cross-dressing, punk-purple hair, and outlandish (to my mind) attire. I commented on the presence of such "extremists" to a man who's been around leather much longer than me. I asked him if such types would have been tolerated in the early days. "Why not?" he chided me. "Leather has always the refuge of the exotic." I was surprised to think that such had been the case. In my mind, I had this idea that there was a day when leather was pure, solely macho, an exclusive, elite group.
In truth, time has a way of glorifying , purifying the past, making it more or less than it really was. Today's leather scene may be different, the techniques more sophisticated, the pos-sibilities wider, but it still remains a search for identity, for meaning, for fraternity.
