It may come as a surprise to leather men and women that the midwest contains dynamic pockets of leatherfolk who make no big deal about their existence. It may or may not be popular to think that the mainstream of gay life, and especially leather/ SM, exists only in major urban centers on both coasts. After all, weren't most of the leather male and female titles won by people from major cities, usually on one or the other coast?

This profile is written to dispel any doubts anyone may have about the spirit of the midwestern leather / SM community -- a lifestyle just as viable in places like Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas or Utah. It's there and people like Viola Johnson are on the front lines of activism and fundraising just like you and you and you in the big cities and major urban centers across the world.

With the selection of Woody Bebout of St. Louis as International Mr. Drummer in 1992, followed the very next year by Emerson Briney of Omaha, (both entered as Mr. Great Plains Drummer), leather communities suddenly realized that all the action was not necessarily in their region.

In what she quietly describes as "the buckle of the bible belt", Viola Johnson, a native of Newark, NJ, who has lived and worked as an assistant director in the movie business in Los Angeles / Hollywood , is perched on the battle lines drawn by strict practitioners of traditional values. We're talking Bixby, Oklahoma -- a suburb of Tulsa where leather/ SM is alive and thriving in an area hostile to any kind of recreational sex for purposes other than procreation and a "do your own thing" attitude is definitely met with hostility. Much respected for her activism and the care and nurturing she gives younger leather folk and the rest of her community, Vi Johnson has had her moments of pride. Like when she and her partner were among the few chosen to carry the Leather/ SM contingent banner at the March on Washington in 1993.

Vi says, "When we rounded the corner and were almost in front of the White House, I looked back and observed a sea of beautiful leather men and women, thousands of them, being accepted and applauded by the spectators and my heart swelled with a feeling so great and so much love for my tribe, I can hardly describe it.'

At Living in Leather in Houston last year, one of the fundraising segments featured a "Chuck Higgins" cage. Vi's mistress ended up in it and people paid almost $900 to keep her in it for several hours. Vi's mistress endured it, a role reversal I've seen only a few times before, but always for charity. A good sport is also a loving sport and it could not be denied here.

Vi Johnson has a lot of fires on the burner as far as her community goes and she's also working hard on her new relationship with Jill. Her expertise with a bullwhip is legendary - after all, isn't it the hides of Oklahoma cattle that dresses many of us? And why not Bixby and why not Oklahoma? A place where leather, levi, western cowboy and bullwhips is a day-to -day existence for straight and gay people and has been for decades -- certainly a routine in Bixby before it made its appearance in other parts of the country! Think about it!

The close-knit leather / SM community in these parts is and always will be a way of life, especially being in the traditional values hot zone.

LOVE IN LEATHER

A slave named c. from Phoenix recently wrote a letter to the editor of Drummer Magazine (Issue #170) asking if it were possible for Masters and slaves to love each other. It seems he wants his Master to love him. His Master , on the other hand, fears that bringing love into the relationship will ruin the sadomasochism they both enjoy. The boy goes on to ask if anyone has any suggestions. That's a loose re-telling of the letter. I'd like to answer him. What do you think? What are your experiences? Does love ruin leather or make it better? Can a Master and slave define their relationship to include love?

As you can see, his letter inspired me to do a bit of questioning myself, so I asked a few friends and acquaintances what they thought about the possibility of love between a Dominant and a submissive. I was surprised that most of the respondents said such a relationship wasn't possible.

My friend John was the quickest to answer. "If, by love, the slave means affectionate activities: cuddling, kissing, etc., then he probably does not want to be a slave, but rather, a bottom who enjoys adding aspects of slavery to his relationship."

"Clearly the Master is more like myself, in that I tend to view things in absolutes, either the boy is a slave, or a lover, not both. It is all relative to the degree we are willing to compromise and clearly his Master does not feel that he is capable of being Master one moment and lover the next."

"In fact, should it become necessary to severely punish the slave, it might not be mentally possible for the Master to do so if he has allowed 'affection' to enter into the relationship. It sounds like the relationship in the letter is headed for the rocks."

Vince, on the other hand, presented the opposite view. "Frankly, I have a LOT of love & affection for my slaves. They are my prized possessions. The love does NOT in any way get 'in the way' of the relationship. In fact, since I either attract slaves who love pain, or train them to love pain, part of what I do is BECAUSE, not in spite of, that affection."

The question itself presents us with several areas of discussion. What is love? Why do we inflict pain? What are the real dynamics between men in sadomasochistic relationships ? But let me continue to allow others their viewpoints.

"Vince is right on target," says Tom. "If we really love someone, we will do what we can to bring him joy. For a slave, joy comes in the training and in the special treatment provided. This is 'sharing pleasure' as defined by the people involved. A really good Top does a lot of exploration of what that 'pleasure' might be and how it can be delivered in a way which is both physically and psychologically satisfying . But then, you knew that's what I'd say!

A Master named Sam added his wisdom. "I know that many slaves do fall in love with their Masters. It seems to me that there are as many of them who find that love diminishes SM as there are who find that love intensifies it. I currently have a slave who loves me, but whom I do not love. It does not in any way interfere with his ability to perform as instructed."

"It seems to me that the effect of love on the Master/ slave dynamic is probably as predictable as it is for any other relationship dynamic."

A slave named John felt differently. "It's a real tough one to answer. My own opinion is that the really heavy roleplaying does get in the way of a relationship. Nobody can keep up the energy level required forever, eventually you gotta get out of the bedroom and be your everyday self. If the relationship started in the playroom and has never ventured outside, then the two people involved have no way of knowing if they are suited for one another."

"A few years ago I was in exactly that boat. I had a Master who was a fantastic Top. I haven't had it so good before or since. But after a while I realized that what was working in the playroom was not working outside. Part of it was my fault. I got caught up in the fantasy and let myself get swept up in the shear wonder of it all."

When I came down to Earth I felt just like a teenager who had experienced his 'first love', too inexperienced to see the difference between great SM and a good relation- ship.

Glenn felt that sometimes, as the Top and bottom become personal friends and get to really like each other, it gets more difficult for the Top to be as severe as he once was. A hot daddy named Mike agreed: "For myself, I find that 'loving' a slave gets in the way of my ability to really give my slaves what they need / desire, especially in the areas of pain and abuse."

"I was in a relationship for over 13 years, but that relationship was based on love and affection, not SM or Master / slave. I had a slave in addition to my lover, but I feel that my love for my slave eventually got in the way of our relationship because I was unwilling to go to the lengths of inflicting pain to the degree that my slave wanted. I cared too much for him to really hurt him that bad!"

"I guess it's all a matter of how we feel as individuals and how that love is expressed. For some, it can work. But from what I have seen and in my own personal experiences, I feel that it is much better to separate my feelings of love from sex and SM play.'

There's a big part of us that wants to have "cut and dried" answers to questions like the one c. asked. We'd like to hand him a book, tell him to turn to page such and such, and do what it says to become the perfect slave.

Likewise we expect that the Master / slave relationships we see will meet our expectations. After all, we think quietly to ourselves, we really do have all the answers.

It's not as simple as all that. Whether c. and his Master can and will become lovers is a question only they can answer. I suspect that their relationship may not be "on the rocks" as John wrote, but it probably is in a significant amount of flux.

Allow me to venture forth with some ideas of my own. What applies to life generally applies to SM specifically as well. After all, Masters and slaves are still human, still full of

the same emotions, ideas, cultural values , and physical limitations that ev- eryone else bears.

We can talk about leather as a lifestyle, as a community, as a way to be, but first and foremost, it is a human experience. In spite of any "rules" or "expectations," relationships are defined , not by textbooks or club codes of conduct, but by the way two men relate to each other. Their relating, of course, may be fairly well defined and spelled out in a contract, or it may be more fluid in nature, lived by common, but unspoken, agreements.

There is certainly no necessity for love in a Master / slave relationship. As far as I can see, the only requirement is that of obedience on the part of the slave to his Master. Nowhere do I see that affection is required. Nowhere is sex demanded. The relationship has no "need" in itself for commitment.

That paragraph sounds strong. It is meant to be that way. I'm not writing about Daddies and their boys, weekend slave wanna-be's, or men who are into "roleplaying." You can have a lot of SM fun without ever being actual

Masters and slaves. Tops and bottoms get along quite well, thank you, each getting exactly (we hope) what they want.

It is true, too, that love often transforms the Master / slave relationship into something else, i.e., you ease from being Master / slave and become lovers. I don't think it has to happen that way, though it often does.

Steven was my first long-term submissive . For nearly a year and a half, he served me well, bringing me orange juice in the morning, doing the dishes at night, and being available for sexual play of any kind whenever I wanted it. It really was a great relationship.

To make a long story short, I entered into a short-lived relationship with a wonderful man, named Bart, who wanted me all to himself so I set Steven free and ended our relationship . Well, to be candid, I ended mine and Steven's relationship for about eight weeks. The monogamy with Bart was short-lived when it became obvious that Steven was the man I loved.

I was soon back in Steven's life and he moved in with me. Shortly thereafter we put away our leather toys, stored the whips and chains, and settled down to what became a very fulfilling, five year, non-leather relationship. For us, love and leather no longer mixed. It was the intensity of the relationship, the fact of our living together, and Steven's therapist that ended our SM, not that we loved each other.

Now, I'm back into leather full swing, or should I say full sling? I've beaten a lot of ass since then and have had more than my share of slaves, even if they were only part time. The idea of maintaining a full time slave, whom I love, is far from impossible.

One of Vince's slaves, in fact, was a slave of mine when they met. My slave asked permission to play with Vince and I granted it. They fell in love.

Sheepishly, they approached me with their problem. Could Vince take ownership of my slave? Well, after a bit of negotiation, the answer was yes. In a private ceremony I transferred the slave's contract to Vince. Almost three years later they still love each other and the one still serves the other obediently.

It really has to do with our understanding of love. There is a strong tendency for us to define relationships in light of the hetero-white-middle-American context in which many of us find ourselves. When we think of love we think of doting teenagers. The word "relationship" smacks us in the face with concepts such as "fidelity" and "monogamy."

Love brings all sorts of sentimental , traditional, and restrictive meanings to mind. Hey, Masters, why can't you beat the shit out of a rebellious slave if that's what is needed?

I ask the question crudely only for hyperbole. But ask your self, why discipline?

I trust you administer a paddle in order to punish or to correct. It is a necessary action. I challenge anyone to contradict my mother when she said that she was spanking me because she loved me!

This is where I get to write in terms that get as absolute as John's. If you own that slave, if he has given himself to you, is it not your right to punish him for infractions of your will? Discipline is not a game, not a toy. Masters discipline in order to train their slaves to be exactly what and how they want them to be.

Slaves are meant to be pleasure-giving , pleasure-serving possessions. The sad truth is that all of them need to be trained to be exactly what their Masters desire. For the true slave, the one who knows his need to be owned, receiving this training holds its own rewards: it makes him more of what he wants to be.

If the pain is inflicted because of the Master's desire to do so, isn't it received because of the slave's willingness to experience it? In consensual SM, isn't giving pain to your slave who desires it, an act of love?

I dare say that if it isn't so, you need to check your motives. There's nothing wrong with a Master turning his boy's ass black and blue, so why can't it be done between men who love each other? Even if the slave doesn't desire it, his slavery will drive him to accept it; doing so is his form of obedience, the only real quality necessary for a true Master / slave relationship. Can a Master whip one he loves? Of course he can, if he owns the one he loves!

I know it raises questions. Mike stated the position well when he said, "My 'loving' a slave gets in the way of my ability to really give my slaves what they need / desire, especially in the areas of pain and abuse."

Take a minute and read the line: "Give my slaves what they need / desire ." It's exactly the fact that we are dealing with submissive masochists that makes inflicting pain an act of love. Are we Masters really dominant sadists? With all due respect to Mike, I often think we have enough "slave training," let's get some Master training for a change!

I once had a slave spend a weekend at my home. We had a great time. As a submissive he left nothing to be desired , except for the possibility that it would have been nice if he had stayed forever. On Sunday morning, after a weekend of play, we were lying in my bed. I said something to him about making me feel good, figuring that he would suck my cock or massage my tits. Instead he reached to the side of the bed, picked up a riding crop, and handed it to me.

"Please use this on me, Sir," he said. I did and in the course of that beating, shot the best load of the weekend . I later asked him why he had sought the beating. His reply was astute : "I knew that whipping me would give you great pleasure, SIR, and so, I asked you to do it."

He loved me and so he gave me the gift of his bare butt. I loved him and so I gave him the pain that he wished.

If a gentle caress meets a need, it ought to be given. If a good paddling does the same thing, why is it seen as being different?

There is no one way to be a leather person, no one way to love. Instead we ought to find the ways that reflect our true selves, fulfill our real needs, and allow us to give ourselves to others honestly and openly. Knowing ourselves and being clear as to our motives and desires is the first step to being able to love freely and deeply. Leather gives us an opportunity to love without restriction , without preconceived ideas and predetermined methods. Can Masters love their slaves? Of course. Can slaves love their Masters? Certainly .

After all is said and done, what really matters is that each has the relationship they desire. Whether c.'s Master ever loves him is up to the Master. If love is more important than submission, then they're going to have to redefine their relationship. And there's nothing wrong with new definitions , especially if the leather is defined lovingly and the love kept "leatherly." -Jack=

ONE-HAN GD READIN was not a happy guy. Not yet, anyway. I'd been transferred by the motorcycle sales and service company to this red-neck hick town, somewhere in western Nevada. Times being what they were, and money, I couldn't afford to turn it down. But I sure as hell hated leaving LA. I'm not a bad looker, if I do say so myself. I was putting it away to take care of my stiffer when I spotted something on the back page. It looked like an ad, framed in a black box, in crude type:

"RattleSnake Peters Fantasy-4- Hire.

Let us in on your wild ideas and we'll DO 'em. Whaddya got to lose?"

Then a box number. I wondered if the missing apostrophe in "Peters" was intentional or just lousy printing. Cute, anyway. I got out some paper and began to write.

"Yep," I say. "Nice night, huh?" "Cut the crap. Let's go inside for some beer."

He turns and struts to the door, swings it aside and steps in, expecting me to follow. I do. He gets two pitchers of beer and leads me to that same booth in the corner where I'd seen the two bikers. We sit, pour some brew into the cold mugs, and start to talk.

"You sound like a hot man," he says, taking a big gulp from his mug. "Look like one, too. Never seen you around here before. I won't ask how you got here, but I bet you're hotter 'n hell for some naked dickplay. That so?"

I took a big swallow of my beer and wiped my mouth. "Sure as hell am. I thought I was going crazy 'till I saw that ad of yours. Get many customers?"

"Énough." He drank some more. Silence. I'm not sure what to do.

The man grins in a sinister but sexy way. "Didn't say it was, didn't say it wasn't." I feel really stupid as he cruises me over.

"Doesn't matter right now, anyway , punk," he says, "cause you're gonna call me 'Sir', aren't ya.'

Shit! I dig the way this guy handles

himself. He's taking command real slow and sure-like. I know some dudes in LA who are into that sorta thing, but not like him. This guy's a pro. "Yes, Sir," I snap. "Good." He leans over with his arms on the table and stares at me with those mirrored eyes of his. His dirty blond hair hangs on his shoulders.

"You look okay, so I'm gonna have me some fuckin' fun playing with you…your dick, your mouth, your tits, your butt." Then he grins some more. "And your head."

I stare frozen into his square-jawed face. He finishes his beer and pours another. So do I.

"So here's what we're gonna do, punk. I read all your nasty sex-ideas. Liked 'em a lot. You're an uninhibited little fucker. I like that. So we're gonna do a real nasty, naked, dirty scene I think you're gonna like. Take some stuff right from your letter, only I'm gonna make it better. And you're gonna do it for me, aren't ya, boy?"

Man, I'm getting all excited with him staring at me and talking like that. I down my beer to cool off, pour some more, and feel like my goddamn boner's gonna rip right outta my pants.

"Sure," I say. "What's it gonna be?" He leans back in the booth and crosses his arms. His pecs stand out hard and stark.

“No, boy, I’m not gonna tell ya.” His lip curls up in a smirk. He grabs his mug. "But you'll find out. Finish your beer so we can get going."

We talk some more about motorcycles and sex, finishing both pitchers. Then he gets up and heads for the door. I scramble to follow, feeling a little woozy but alright. We get back to the bikes and I was beginning to mount mine when he grabs me by the wrist and pulls me away.

"No, punk, you're coming with me '

In a gleaming flash some handcuffs appear out of nowhere, probably from the bag on his saddle, and before I know it my hands are cuffed behind me.

"Your bike'll stay here 'til you get back. Get on!"

He nearly lifts me off the ground as I straddle his bike and sit down hard. He gets on in front of me and starts the engine. In no time we're heading down the highway in the desert night air. The moon is full and the stars are out, giving the landscape an eerie glow that seems to be just right.

We ride for awhile, me holding on as best I can from the back. I can't help but slide forward, pressing my crotch against his ass. I like that. I hope he

After about half an hour he turns and scrambles up a dirt road into the hills. I'm having a harder time staying on now. We cross over the top and head down behind the hills until the highway is out of sight. The only thing I can hear now is the bike. Soon I see a small shack and some trees, with a dim spotlight lighting up the front. We pull up in front of the building. He shuts the cycle down and hops off.
