Several weeks ago I had the opportunity and the pleasure of being selected to judge for the International Mr. Leather Contest in Chicago. That "job" (what else can you say of 18 hours of concentrated work over two days!) gave me the realization, again, how we all, within the Leather Community, have different perceptions of how to live with LEATHER (or should we say FETISH) and what we actually expect to get out of our Leather lifestyle.

As I listened to the questions asked by my fellow judges and deliberated on the answers of each contestant, it was revealed to me how much work still needs to be done to defend our chosen lifestyle. It became even more evident how much we need to continue to educate each other as well as ourselves. You see, out there in places beyond the large Leather centers live many people who are deeply committed to this particular lifestyle and who are prepared to do all the hard work necessary to maintain and defend that lifestyle.

It was my perception during IML that any person who was willing to watch and listen during those four or five days of social and intimate interaction, had to make the realization that although the attraction to the "same sex" is the common factor for our lives to be connected, we are as diverse in living our lives as our heterosexual counterparts.

It is, therefore, even more important that DRUMMER Magazine reflect the myriad of lifestyles within our gay Leather / Fetish community. Perhaps it is not quite as important for those of us continued on next page…

DEFTHE TOP living in cities with large, gay / Leather populations like San Francisco, New York or Berlin, but very important for those people who are living in other places where meeting like-minded Leatherfolk are few and far between. We, as one of the few magazines which represent the gay / Leather community as a whole, recognizes the need to reflect such diversity; to offer information and "experience" to those areas where the facets of our lifestyle are not readily available.

As the new publisher at Desmodus, Inc., I was approached and spent a great amount of time listening to people and their comments. It was amazing how many people have bought DRUMMER Magazine for the sole purpose of being connected to other Leathermen in the world and to be aware of what was going on in the Leather community at large. As the world grows smaller because communications and travel becomes more extensive, we will be influenced, positively or negatively, by what happens not only at home but also world-wide.

While IML, IMsL and the Mr. Drummer Contest are "snapshots" of or a glimpse into the "state of our Leather community", it is important for DRUMMER to be like a "continuous mirror" of our readers and endeavor to show the different ways we like to live our lives.

You, as an attentive reader, will have noticed the gradual change of DRUMMER Magazine in the past few months. I hope you like the change of our covers and I hope you will be regular readers, based on the contents within. We are not quite there yet. It will probably take a few more months before we at DRUMMER will tell you "This is it!" We are building up a network of foreign correspondents who will give you the world's "Leather The search for exciting Info". photography and hot fiction is in full swing. We want to hear from all parts of the USA and the world in order to fully represent who and what you have chosen to be as a Leather person.

DRUMMER Magazine has a very loyal readership and we thank you for your letters and comments. I assure you that we do listen to you. Also, a new breed of gay / Leatherfolk are coming out. Help us reach them so that they have the opportunity to join this strong, diverse community.

Old News and New Sleaze by Joseph W. Bean

It is definitely old news, in a world awash with new magazines, to remind you of a newsletter that has been cranking out issues for many years: The Journal of Sexual Liberty. Still, it seems you need a "The Journal" is reminder. primarily a collection of clippings and comments from all the news media about what is going on in the whole gamut of sex, not just leathersex or gay sex, but all of it. The compiler / editor, Jerry Jansen, gives "The Journal" a slight bias, meaning he puts a bit more energy into exposing bigotry and idiocy around sex than into celebrating the exercise of liberty. This is a perfectly reasonable way of going about the thing though, don't you think? If something goes well, it is enough to mention it to one another and go on, knowing that the alternative press--including our gay papers anad mags--will cover it. If something dangerous is happening or threatening to happen--something we need to do something about-- that's what we may need to be told about by a renegade like Jerry.

I think everyone who has sex ought to be subscribing to and carefully reading The Journal of Sexual Liberty. If you don't, you won't even know what anti-sexual evil lurks in the corridors of Congress, or the Public Library, or your local Police Department. How Now New Mags…

Steam is a promising new title, with what might be a problem… but I imagine it will be successful and useful. So, you ought to be one of the first to know about it. This 7" by 8 1 / 2" (quarto, isn't it?) sized publication calls itself "A Quarterly Journal For Men", and it zeroes in very tightly on men who would be pleased to admit (at least to themselves) that they are sex-hounds . Features in the first issue include a piece on sex club door policies, listings of bathhouses and sex clubs, a celebration of favorite glory holes all across the US, and sex-seeker travel reviews of several cities. The problem, if there is one, is that the locations where sleazy gay pigs have sex are given in detail, meaning that people who don't belong there will have no trouble finding them for their unpleasant purposes. On the other hand, it always seems that pigs have trouble finding their troughs, even when bashers, baiters and bigots do not. So, no problem? You decide.

Steam is published and edited by Drummer super-model Scott "Spunk" O'Hara, and despite it's intention to support and facilitate sleaze, it is a classy mag with a Steam is sharp, clean look. published by PDA Press, Inc., Route 2, Box 1215, Cazenovia, WI 53924, at just $17.00 for four issues.

Tough Hide, another newly arrived little mag, is more intentionally directed at you, as a leatherman. In fact, it is subtitled "The Leather People's Magazine." Considering that the premiere issue starts off with fiction by Cain Berlinger, cover art by The Hun, and additional art by Leon, you might think right away that Tough Hide is aiming to be a lot like Drummer. I think not. Even if the story "Soaked", written by someone identified only as Bobby is one you could just as easily have found in Drummer, it has a flavor of Drummer in another era, a time If the interview of Kay past. Hallanger (celebrating her 50th birthday) might also be something you could imagine finding in these pages, it seems to belong to yet another style of Drummer, one that might be imagined for the

future.

No, publisher Brett Sprang is not out to make a new Drummer, he's doing something that is entirely his own. Maybe, given a little time in the publishing business, he will start to do what his little (5 by 8) mag promises just by existing: Maybe it will begin to introduce us to new artists and writers, and to new ways of handling photo spreads Tough Hide is just and such. different enough to promise such things, and its survival clearly depends on delivering on that Meantime, pick up a promise. copy at a newsstand, or subscribe… it's hot enough to be well worth the price. Metropolitan Slave is something entirely new, in a way. It's a newsletter for and about the urban "Anybody can be a sex slave. bottom," the publisher writes on page one of issue #2, "anybody can go into a back bathroom in a sleazy gay bar and suck dick or drink piss- -does this make you a Metropolitan Slave? i think not. " But it may well be the stuff a Metro Slave does while waiting to connect with a Metro Master, I suppose. Whatever! The newsletter is very interesting, more than mildly entertaining, and--I have to believe- -has a future. We can hope that in the future, the style of slavery described and referred to in the newsletter will broaden, but then that is very nearly inevitable.

Metropolitan Slave publisher John Birch is offering four issues for $12.00. Videos, Too (Count 'Em, Two)

If there is any video producer who has been over-exposed in these pages (and I think there is not, of course), it is Bob Jones. But he just keeps putting out videos you could very well want to know about. This time, it's Anal Wash. Yep, an enema-related movie from the king of quick and dirty bondage / tickling flicks.

Anal Wash is a rather silly story- -but aren't they all--about a guy who is visited by a cop because he has failed to turn down his stereo after being warned by neighbors. CELEBRATING MEN OF THE PACIFIC

Coming up on August 15-22, 1993 will be the first-ever Pacific International Conference on Men and Masculinity. This will run concurrently with the tenth annual Hawaii Men's Gathering. Taking place at the Kalani Honua Institute for Cultural Studies

Conference Center on the Big Island of Hawaii, this gathering is for men whose common bond is their Pacific heritage. This year's theme is "The Voyager Returns".

In the last decade, many reputable scholars of this region and culture have reintroduced and supported the "aikani" (men who have sex with men) as a common and accepted aspect of the Pacific region. This social structure existed until Western missionaries invaded the islands with diseases that decimated island populations and established a morality that cloaked the natural sensuality of the islanders. The Conference/ Gathering will provide a forum for men who are making important contributions in men's studies and the movement to improve men's health. The event affirms multiculturalism along with support for the self-determination of women, people of color and gays. Support for the event is coming from the Performing Arts Department of the University of Hawaii, Hilo campus, and the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, with funds from the Hawaii State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.

On Sunday, the Conference / Gathering with culminate with The Men Dancing concert at 2PM.

This event follows on the heals of the Hawaii Supreme Court's ruling to legally sanction same-sex marriages.

"Quiet down son. You do exactly as Daddy says and we'll keep this little game to ourselves, OK?" John Monroe was a big man who drank a lot. With him, drinking and violence went hand in hand. His wife and son were the unfortunate recipients of his lust as well as his brutality.

Although Brett had been abused for as long as he could remember, it was the night of his nineteenth birthday that stood out most vividly in his mind. He had been awake for hours, listening to his father heap verbal abuse on his mother. The yelling was frightening and the language was intense and vile. Brett clutched his blankets to him as he listened to the beatings night after night. The inevitable pounding, as his mother's body would hit the floor or bounce off the nearest wall. It frightened him terribly and further fueled his hatred toward his father. He pulled the covers over his head, reverting to childhood, as he attempted to drown out the anguished cries of his mother. It was often followed by her running down the hall and into the far bedroom, seeking safety behind the locked door as she latched it behind her. With a distance established between herself and her husband she couldn't have cared less about Brett once she herself was safe.

Brett listened to the approach of his father's heavy laden footsteps as they trod down the hall and paused outside of his son's bedroom. Brett prayed hard, hoping that his father wouldn't come in, wouldn't disturb him, wouldn't attempt to make him do things that in his heart he felt was wrong. When John was in this mood it was not unusual for him to heap abuse on Brett also, usually followed by a slap across the face, or a fist to the gut.

The door swung hesitantly open and Brett closed his eyes tightly, praying that his father would change his mind and leave him in one night of peace. John Monroe was too big to pray away, and the giant of a man shut the door behind him. He walked over and sat at the foot of Brett's bed. Brett lay perfectly still, as he pretended to be asleep. He listened to his father's heavy labored breathing. Despite his lean muscular build, Brett was afraid to breathe, afraid to give any indication that he was even alive. The past had taught him to never oppose his father.

John rubbed his hands over Brett's legs, through the covers. The light from the near window illuminated John's handsome yet ravaged face as he stared at his son's figure cowering under the covers. He rubbed both of his hands over the curves and muscle of the trembling hulk until his hands rested on Brett's buttocks.

Inside his head, John was a tortured man. He had married young to escape his abusive family. He himself had endured a childhood of abuse, verbal and sexual, by his alcoholic parents and older brother. For some reason he now felt compelled to continue the line. John saw nothing wrong with his actions, he had found a way to use brute force to solicit fear and what he hoped was respect, love and even affection. He beat his wife because he loved her. He convinced himself that his wife needed to feel his heavy hand, just to assure herself that he cared.

John stood up and quickly removed his clothing. Despite the years of guarded petting, he had patiently waited for his son to grow. He had watched hungrily as his son blossomed into the handsome young man he had become. Brett slid the covers down from his face and saw his father's hard naked body outlined in the dim light. John was a man in his forties who kept his body in good shape by hard construction work. His cock was frightening to the adolescent, who had never seen a cock of such length and girth. Contest which was held every September in San Francisco during the CMC Carnival (California Motorcycle Club). He ended up as 1ST Runner-Up. John Embrey, Founding Publisher of Drummer Magazine, decided that a Mr. Drummer representative needed to stand alone, so a new contest was born.

On April 24, 1981, one month before Drummer's 6TH birthday, the first Mr. Drummer was selected in San Francisco at a danceclub called Dreamland. The Western Regional was held in San Francisco the previous winter and the Eastern Regional happened the summer before. Ray Perea won the distinction of being Mr. Drummer 1981. This handsome man is on the cover of Drummer #46. He continued on to Chicago to compete in International Mr. Leather 1981.

Thanks to Karl Stewart, past Advertising Director and John Rowberry, past Editor, the idea of displaying a "sexual fantasy" as part of the judged competition has set the Mr. Drummer Contest apart from almost any other major Leather contest.

Twelve years later, the Mr. Drummer Contest is still going strong! There have been a number of Leathermen who made great contributions to the Leather Community holding this title. PAIN & THE LEATHER LIFESTYLE by Jack Rinella

The Leather scene is famous (notorious?) for its focus on paddling, whipping, cock, ball, and tit torture, and the infliction of pain in general. Because of that, how to handle the resulting pain is an often asked question.

The most obvious way, of course, is to avoid it. But avoiding pain denies us the satisfaction we're looking for. Pain holds a certain attraction and so we allow it into our lives.

Before I go too far (and some would say I went too far years ago!), I'd like to set some background rules. I'm not writing about violence, harm, abuse, or coercion. They have no place in real SM activities. If any of these characteristics are present, then it's not what I'm into.

For the sake of this column, I'd like to make the distinction between corporal punishment and the infliction of pain for the giving of pleasure. They're different and have different effects. Discipline is a topic all in itself. Let me write about pain.

A person can endure a significant amount of pain from a whip, strap, hand, or paddle if their application begins slowly and builds to a higher, faster, and stronger level. This technique is used when the spanking or whipping is meant to give pleasure to either partner. "Warming an ass" prepares it for a heavier beating as the body adjusts itself to increasingly higher levels of pain. Pain that begins at a higher level of intensity is more difficult to tolerate.

During the times that pleasure is the reason for the pain, there is (usually) a warmth, camaraderie, and intimacy that is lacking when the pain is for the sake of punishment. When it's for pleasure, caressing, kissing, fondling, and stroking are often intermixed with the application of pain.

Discipline feels different and effects a slave or bottom differently. Whereas many bottoms enjoy a paddling, most will do their best to avoid the paddle when it is applied as a punishment. Strange as it may seem, the purpose and technique create a wholly other experience when the Top wields a whip as a means of correction or penance.

Some Tops impose rules during a scene in order to create a reason for punishment. Likewise, some bottoms break rules in order to "force" the Top to punish them. In either case, if the scene works, then its right for its participants. But all too often such artificiality is uncalled for. The simple recognition of rights and reasons can eliminate the need for such "play-acting" entirely.

What I mean is this: if a Top wants to spank, paddle, whip, or inflict pain, he doesn't need to use rules to gain "permission" to do so. As the dominant partner with a consenting bottom, he already has that permission. The sake of the Top's pleasure is reason enough to proceed. In a real Master / slave relationship, the Top is in control and that is grounds enough for him to do as he feels, within the limits of safety, sanity, and consent.

As Larry, an experienced Master says, "You don't need to break a rule for me to punish you. I'll do it just because I want to do it, if you want a paddling, don't fuck up, just ask me for it and you'll get it." Larry can speak that way because of his own self-confidence. He recognizes the rights and responsibilities inherent in an SM relationship and is comfortable with the gratification they offer.

The vast majority of Leather scenes, of course, never approach the intensity of a true Master / slave relationship. Most of the time, the Leather scene is simply an acting out fantasy. The "scene" is kept in the realm of play, and is seldom, if ever allowed to effect one's life and style.

There is more to the Leather scene than play-acting. It can be more than pleasurable. Like all relationships, SM can provide an environment for personal growth and deep, meaningful relationships. When two people come together with mutual respect and understanding, they open themselves to a world of miracles and delight.

Most people shy away from the possibility of being hit with a belt, or whacked with a paddle. Taking it a step further, few people want to have their body covered in clothespins, slaps, hot wax, or other SM "uncomfortable" devices.

On the other hand, pain can be a rewarding experience, a door opening into a set of very positive feelings. In order for these "alternative" feelings to be felt, there are mental and physiological shifts to make.

Pain is pain and pain hurts. SM pain is no different. When a loving Master whips a trusting slave, wonderful things may take place, but the slave still feels the pain. He may not mind it or feel it for long. There may be cascades of pleasure, exceptional alternate sensations, deep mystical events, but there is pain.

What is different is not that the pain ceases, but rather that we change the pain into other kinds of feelings.

I recently took part in a "Bun Warming Fund Raiser". I volunteered to allow the highest bidder to paddle my ass. As the high bidder was using the paddle on me, I felt pain. I have felt worse pain, since he certainly wasn't beating me unmercifully.

I was leaning over a padded saw horse and thinking, "Well, this is a good show for the rest of the people watching. I hope we raise some good money for TPAN." What was foremost in my mind wasn't the pain, but the reason for the pain. I wasn't afraid of what was going to happen so I remained fairly relaxed.

In a very few minutes the paddling was over and my job was done.

But the effect of the swats lasted. A half hour later, as I was standing at the bar drinking a beer, I noticed the warmth that the paddle had induced in my butt. My hand could actually feel the heat. It felt good. There was a certain satisfaction of having endured it as well as a feeling of pleasure. There was a slight euphoria in my body. The pain had been transmuted.

How is that done? There are various techniques. Physically, our bodies "defend" themselves from the trauma of pain by releasing endorphins into our system. These naturally occurring chemicals give us the slight euphoria that I experienced after my paddling. The more intense the pain, the greater the amount of endorphins released. This is similar to the effect of the "runners high".

Mental techniques that can be used to tolerate pain include relaxation and focussing. The relaxation techniques are various forms of meditative and physiological exercises, such as breath regulation and muscle relaxation. Pain is

Rough Stuff intensified with the onslaught of fear and panic. Relaxation counters this natural tendency. Tensed muscles handle pain with much more difficulty than ones that are relaxed.

The other technique is to focus on thoughts and actions other than the pain itself. Just as I concentrated on the audience's pleasure and the funds being raised for TPAN, any distraction from the pain is helpful.

Many well trained bottoms, who are used to enduring pain, concentrate not on the pain they are receiving but rather on the pleasure their Top is receiving by administering it. Each side of us builds and feeds the other. Each "part" of us only seems to be part of a part. In reality we are one and complete in many dimensions.

In a real sense my slave and I become one in the tapestry, the event of the submission / domination we create. It is a mutual event.
